(Galactica - Rack)

(pilots are laying in bed)

HeadSix/Baltar (Singing): Close your eyes, go to sleep, baby’s in the cradle counting sheep. Climb up to your house of dreams, baby’s in the cradle fast asleep.

(Galactica - Brig)

Baltar: Should I die before I wake. Sorry, improvising.
HeadSix: You’re doing the right thing, Gaius. Gaius?
Baltar: What. Yes, yes.

(Guard knocks on the door)

Guard: Wake up.

(Camera pans across sleeping officers again)

HeadSix/Baltar (Singing): Close your eyes, go to sleep, baby’s in the cradle counting sheep. Climb up to your house of dreams.

(Gaeta wakes up suddenly)

(Galactica - Brig)

(Baltar is standing on a chair, noose around his neck)

Baltar: Wait, wait a moment. I need some time to think this through.
HeadSix: Too late, Gaius. It’s time to learn the truth.

(She kicks the chair out from under him. He falls)

(Galactica - Outside the brig)

Gaeta: Sergeant.
Guard: Sorry Sir, no one is allowed to speak to the prisoner without direct presidential authorization.
Gaeta: I already have authorization, I need to speak to the prisoner now.
Guard: Step back, Sir.

(Galactica - Brig)

HeadSix: That’s it Gaius, deep breaths, deep breaths.

(Resurrection Ship)

(Baltar awakes in a resurrection tank with three six‘s around him.)

Six: That’s it Gaius, deep breaths, deep breaths. The first time’s the hardest, you’re doing wonderfully.
Baltar: I’m alive? I’m alive. (Laughs) Thank God I’m alive!
Six: I always told you to have faith.
Baltar: Then no one was betrayed. I was never one of them, I am one of you.
Six: Is that what you think, Gaius?
Baltar: I knew it, I knew it. I always knew I was different, special, maybe a little gifted.

(The six’s start scratching him, violently)

Baltar: That was a bit rough, actually, that hurt!
Six: You’re wrong, Gaius. You’re not a Cylon, you’re human. And you’re dead!

(She pushes him back into the resurrection tank, follows him in, and kisses him. Baltar awakes on the brig floor from mouth-to-mouth.)

Guard: He’s alive.
Gaeta: I’ll get Cottle.

(Galactica - Hanger Deck)

Lee: I’m just saying, you’re gonna be surprised.
Galen: Yeah well, Major.
Lee: Right this way.
Galen: Joe’s, I think I’ve seen a bar before. You gotta be frakin kidding me.
Lee: Come on! Hey this way. Hey Joe!
Joe: Chief Tyrol, welcome! Any friend of the Major’s is a friend of mine. Which means, you get the good stuff.
Galen: Thank you very much, don’t mind if I do. I’m not goin home tonight, so.
Lee: Why uh, you and Cally have a fight?
Galen: You didn’t hear us? Figured we could have sold tickets. To marriage, why we build bars.
Lee: Yeah. Joe!

(Galactica - Adama’s Quarters)

Cottle: I warned about the dangers of sleep depravation. Psychosis can make a man do strange things, and Baltar’s little hunger strike isn’t helping either.
Tigh: Bastard wants to die that bad, I say let him.
Roslin: Bottom line we need Baltar to talk. If the other Cylons saw the same symbols we saw, they could be on their way to Earth, they could be setting up an ambush by now. I’m betting that after tonight, he’ll be more willing. Doc, wait an hour or two. I want him cogent. I also don’t want him to starve.
Cottle: Well what do you expect me to do about it?
Roslin: I expect you to make sure he eats.
Tigh: I’ll see about putting security cameras in that cell.
(Cottle and Tigh leave)
Roslin: Um, Mr. Gaeta, what exactly were you doing going to see Dr. Baltar in the middle of the night.
Gaeta: Um, I couldn’t sleep and uh, I thought he might be willing to talk to me.
Adama: We understand, just leave his interrogation to us.
Gaeta: Of course.

(Galactica - Lee’s Quarters)

(Lee stumbles in, drunk)

Lee: You’re up late. You know the Chief says hi.
Dee: He one of your new drinking buddies?
Lee: You know I would invite you, but you made it very clear that it’s not your thing.
Dee: No it’s your thing, and that’s not what I was asking.
Lee: I got a briefing, at oh-five-hundred.
Dee: Are we still on for dinner tomorrow?
Lee: Oh dammit (under his breath). Yeah.
Dee: Cause I already switched watches.
Lee: Sure.
Dee: Just be nice for a husband and wife to occasionally (She stops, noticing that Lee is asleep.) Forget it.

(Galactica - Brig)

Roslin: Thank you, you can leave the door open.
Guard: Yes Ma’am.
Roslin: Hi.
(She gives him glasses, prompting Baltar to remember Roslin’s New Caprica cell. Roslin lights a cigar and gives it to Baltar, who immediately enjoys it)
Baltar: Touché, Madame President.
Roslin: I have no wish to see your suffer.
Baltar: Really? I just had the pleasure of having a tube forced up my nose and down my throat.
Roslin: Everybody’s gotta eat. It’s for your own good. And that’s nothing comparing to what many of our people were subject to on New Caprica.
Baltar: Not my jails, the Cylon’s.
Roslin: That’s an academic distinction at this point, Doctor. You know none of us are enjoying this, so why don’t you just tell me what I need to know, and your suffering will come to an end, and I promise you this.
Baltar: I know nothing about the Cylon plans or their whereabouts. I witnessed nothing in that temple. My information on Cylon intelligence is limited, to say the least.
Roslin: Prior to the attack on the Colonies, did you have high level security clearance?
Baltar: Yeah, so what?
Roslin: Did you tell anybody about it? Did you let someone into the defense mainframe?
HeadSix: Careful Gaius.
Roslin: The blonde woman that I saw you with on Caprica just prior to the attack.
HeadSix: She’ll flush you out of an airlock without a moments hesitation. Unless of course, that prospect no longer frightens you.
Baltar: Lies, all lies. A rehash of all the other old lies. I did not collude in the genocide of my own people.
(Roslin stands up, shakes her head at Gaius, and walks away disgusted.)

(Some time later, Roslin is standing with pictures attempting to make Baltar feel shame at the occupation)
Roslin: This is Devilin and Maryanne McAllister, and their son and daughter. This is a family of four that was gunned down in their own home on suspicion of harboring insurgents.
Baltar: I am not responsible.
Roslin: Just wondered if you recognized any one of these faces, did any one get through to you? On the rare occasion when you ventured out from behind your sandbags and your razor wires…
Baltar (interlaced with Roslin‘s yelling): I am not responsible for the occupation anymore than I am for the genocide.
Roslin (continuing her yelling, ignoring Baltar): To see what was happening to your people. Your people! I need to know now! Colonel Tigh! Get in here! Get this man outta here.
Baltar (interlaced with Roslin): This is not about uncovering any legitimate threat! This is about exacting your pound of flesh!
Roslin (overtop of Baltar): He’s not gonna talk, I want you to take him, I want you to toss him out the nearest airlock.
Tigh (overtop of Baltar): About Godsdamn time. Guards!
Roslin: Guards! Get in here now! Get rid of him! Take him out of here!
Baltar: What happened to my fair trial? Keep your hands off me, keep your mother fraking hands off me! I demand a fair trial! I am a citizen of the Colonies, and I demand a fair trial! A fair trial!

(Galactica - Memorial hall)

Roslin: Take a good look Doctor, these are but a fraction of the people you sent to their deaths! Rather fitting they should see you take your last steps!
Baltar: Stop, stop wait, stop!
Roslin: What! What!
Baltar: You wanted to see if I know any of these people, I know that man!
Roslin: What! Show me, show me! Let him go, keep your guns on him!
Baltar: This man, his name was Adrian Bauer. He was my lab assistant for three years on Caprica.
Roslin: So what!
Baltar: He was Gemenese. I got him a visa. I introduced him to his wife. I am Godfather to their first child, I wouldn’t do anything to harm this man or his family. Or anybody’s family! I am not a murderer, I am innocent! Why won’t you believe me!
Roslin: Get him! Take him out of here!
Baltar: Is this what you call Colonial justice? What did I ever do for you, huh? Only save your bleeding life!

(Galactica - Adama’s Quarters)

Adama: You gave it your best shot. I understand.
Tigh: Eh, the bastard still wouldn’t talk. Either he’s got more stones than I give him credit for or.
Adama: Or he knew you were bluffing.
Tigh: Well, what do we do with him now?
Adama: There is one thing.
Roslin: Admiral?
Adama: Military once ran an experimental interrogation program, involving drugs. Hallucinogens, specifically. The goal of the program was to create a state of anxiety so intense that the subject believed that their very survival was at stake. Interrogators would exploit that. Become less an adversary and more of a lifeline. At least that was the idea. It might get Baltar to talk, tell us what the Cylons know about Earth. But it’s dangerous, especially for someone in Baltar’s condition.
Roslin: You’re telling me we have these drugs aboard Galactica?

(Galactica - Kara’s rack)

Kara: You’re being awfully accommodating.
Sam: Is that how it looks to you?
Kara: Your estranged, two timing, bitch of a wife calls you up for a quickie and you hop on the first shuttle? I’d say yeah.
Sam: I’ve been thinking about some stuff Kara.
Kara: Yeah like what?
Sam: (Sighing) Like what that crazy skin job Leoben said about you and a special destiny, you know, what if there’s something to that?
Kara: Kara Thrace and her special destiny, that sounds more like a bad cover band, Sam.
Sam: Think about it though. Why did I survive all those months on Caprica, waiting for you to return, if I was just gonna walk out on you? And you, I mean did you go through that hell locked in that fake house with that fake husband just so you could ditch me? I don’t think so. You know when I think about it like that, do you love him?
Kara: What?
Sam: Lee, Kara, do you love Lee?
Kara: Gods, Sam. Maybe.
Sam: Then you gotta go to him.

(Galactica - Lee’s Quarters)

Dee: I thought you were off duty.
Lee: I am, yeah, I was just gonna stop by the bar for a little while.
Dee: If you’re gonna see Kara, just admit it.
Lee: Look I told you, there’s nothing going on.
Dee: You both told me. Lee won’t cheat, he’s too noble. Only problem is it’s all a crock, isn’t it?
Lee: You know what the only problem is? The only problem is that you don’t trust me, that’s it. And this is just your own frakin insecurities talking, same as always. I mean, right from the get go. The very first morning that I proposed! You know what, forget it. This is fraking pointless!
Dee: No, you’re right. I did see this coming, and I was naïve enough to marry you anyway. And you wanna know why Lee? Cause I loved you, I loved you so fraking much. I thought I was lucky, that’s right, lucky. That I could have you just as long as you, or Kara, would let me.
Lee: No. Dee this, come on.
Dee: It’s not a marrage Lee, this is a lie. You wanna be with Kara, go. I won’t stand in your way. It’s over.
Lee: Wait, where are you going?
(Dee leaves)

(Galactica - Kara’s rack)

Kara: Sam.
Sam: I gotta get going. This was fun.
(Sam opens the curtain. Kara grabs him and kisses him, deeply.)
Sam: I love you.
(Sam leaves, Kara pulls her curtain shut.)

(Galactica - Sickbay)

Baltar: I’m a human being. I’m a human being, I have rights. I said I have rights, please, please help me.
HeadSix: I’m not sure I can, Gaius. Pain is one thing, but this, without free will, what are you? Can God even pity such a creature?
Baltar: Why not just admit you’re doing this for your own satisfaction. That’s the truth isn’t it. I don’t know why you’re not putting the needle in yourself.
Cottle: Hold his head.
Baltar: Oh no, no, no!
(He’s injected)
Cottle: He’s under.
Adama: Try not to make any loud noise. Put the head strap on.

(Baltar’s hallucination)

Baltar: My God, where am I?

(Galactica - Briefing room)

Lee: What are you saying?
Kara: If I leave Sam, will you still leave Dee?
Lee: My Gods, Kara. I mean, how do I know that tomorrow you’re not gonna pull another one eighty? I mean these are our fraking marriages we’re talking about. It’s not some stupid dogfight we can just jink our way out of.
Kara: Think about it Lee, that’s what you’re best at.

(Baltar’s hallucination)

Baltar: Where am I? My God where am I?
Adama (voice echoing): Can you hear my voice, can you hear me doctor?
Baltar: Admiral, is that you?
Adama: I’m looking for you, doctor.

(Galactica - Sickbay)

Adama: We can’t find you, can you tell us where you are?

(Baltar’s hallucination)

Baltar: It’s water. I’m in the water, it’s cold, and it’s dark.
(He swims away)
Baltar: I can’t see anything!

(Galactica - Sickbay)

Adama: Is there anything that you can see that can tell us where you are?

(Baltar’s hallucination)

Adama: Look for the light, can you see the light?
Baltar: Yes.
Adama: Try to reach for the light.

(Galactica - Sickbay)

Adama: That’s it.
Baltar: Yes.
Adama: Follow the light.

(Flashbacks from Baltar’s time on Caprica with Six, right as the nuke wave hits his house)

(Baltar’s hallucination)

Baltar: Caprica.

(Galactica - Sickbay)

Caprica Six. She saved my life, she shielded me from the explosion.
Roslin: Doctor, did you conspire with her to subvert our defense systems?

(Baltar’s hallucination)

Baltar: Conspiracy requires intent.

(Galactica - Sickbay)

Baltar: I never intended. But then she said keep down I’d always suspected.

(Baltar’s hallucination)

Baltar: But I didn’t know, how could I know?

(Galactica - Sickbay)

Baltar: Did I conspire? Did I?

(Baltar’s hallucination)

Baltar: No. No!

(Galactica - Sickbay)

Baltar: I don’t know, no. It wasn’t my fault, it wasn’t my fault!

(Baltar’s hallucination)

Baltar: I am not responsible!

(Galactica - Sickbay)

(Baltar’s scream startles Ishay, who knocks over a table of instruments, making a loud noise. Baltar’s trip goes bad. He starts to see a Six in the water with him)

Baltar: Caprica Six, she chose me. Chose me over all men. Chosen to be seduced. Taken by the hand, guided between the light and the dark. But is she an angel or is she a demon. Is she imaginary or is she real?

(During this, he dreams of HeadSix - how she’s helped him over his long journey)

(Baltar’s hallucination)

Baltar: Is she my own voice or is she the voice of…

(He goes under)

(Galactica - Sickbay)

Baltar: I can’t stay afloat much longer!
Adama: Now give us details Doctor! Give us details about the Cylons or, or I’ll let you drown. Alone, in the dark.

(He turns off his flashlight, Baltar’s heart races)

Baltar: NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

(Galactica - Joes)

Lee: Hey Chief.
Galen: Why is it so frakin hard? Why can’t we just get back to normal?
Lee: Normal? What is normal anyway. Uh, Chief you can tell me if I’m outta line here. Do you ever think about Sharon?
Galen: No.
Lee: Come on, you never wonder what if?
Galen: No.
(He leaves)
(Lee takes a long hard look at his ring)

(Galactica - Sickbay)

Baltar: Look, don’t leave me! Don’t leave me! I know I’m flawed, I never claimed to be. Yeah, mistakes, mistakes were made. Terrible mistakes, were they mine? Am I solely to blame? I was a player, that’s all. I was a player, I was struggling, trying to find my place in God’s plan. God’s resolve. I never intended for certain things to happen! Doesn’t that matter?
Adama: You took the Cylons to the temple.

(Baltar’s hallucination)

Adama: To the Eye of Jupiter. What did it tell them?

(Galactica - Sickbay)

Adama: What did it tell them about Earth?
Baltar: I wasn’t looking for.
(Adama flips the light on)
Adama: What were you looking for, Doctor? What were you looking for?

(Baltar’s hallucination)

(This time, Baltar is in another resurrection tank, surrounded by several people who’s faces are covered in blood, most likely they are images of people that were killed on Caprica in the holocaust. They are playing in the resurrection pool)

(Galactica - Sickbay)

Baltar: Their faces but they wouldn’t show them to me.
Roslin: Their faces? Who’s faces?
Baltar: The five.

(Baltar’s hallucination)

Baltar: The final five.

(Galactica - Sickbay)

Roslin: The final five, Cylons?
Baltar: I thought I..

(Baltar’s hallucination)

Baltar: Might be one of them, I told them I wanted to be one of them?

(Galactica - Sickbay)

Roslin: A Cylon? Why?
Baltar: All my sins forgiven.

(Baltar’s hallucination)

Baltar: A new beginning.

(Galactica - Sickbay)

Roslin: Are you a Cylon, Doctor Baltar?
(pause)
Baltar: No.

(Baltar’s hallucination)

(The people take their hands out of the resurrection pool)

(Galactica - Sickbay)

Adama: That’s not good enough, doctor. Tell me, tell me what you told the Cylons.

(Baltar’s hallucination)

Adama: What do they know. Tell me.

(Galactica - Sickbay)

Adama: I’ll have to let you go doctor.

(Baltar’s hallucination)

Adama: I’ll have to let you go. Tell me or I’ll have to let you go doctor. I’ll have to let you go.

(One of the children around the pool pushes Baltar into the pool. They both sink. The child has his hands around Baltar’s neck.)

(Galactica - Hallway)

(Lee is drunk, bumping into people.)

Lee: Hey, watch where you’re going.
(His ring flies out of his hand. He searches frantically - violently knocking stuff over)
Lee: My ring, has anyone seen my ring. Has anyone seen my ring. My ring!

(Galactica - Sickbay)

(The machine beeps)

Cottle: Admiral! We’re losing him. That’s enough. I’m putting an end to this freak show right now!

(Roslin nods in agreement, wiping a tear from her eye.)

(Galactica - Adama’s Quarters)

Roslin: Now listen to this. Five final Cylon models. Five pillars of the temple, for the five priests devoted to the one who’s name cannot be spoken.
Tigh: Come on, it’s all just mumbo jumbo.
Roslin: He’s holding a lot back Admiral, I’m sure of it.
Adama: Then maybe we should resort to more direct methods.
Tigh: Direct methods, now you have my vote.
Roslin: No. We tried the stick, it’s time to try the carrot. The thing he’s most deeply afraid of is, even if he talks, we’ll kill him.
Tigh: Smart man.
Roslin: We have to ease his fear, make him believe if he collaborates, at the very least he’ll have his life.
Adama: He won’t buy that coming from us.
Roslin: Of course not, we have to find someone he trusts.

(Galactica - Brig)

Baltar: As perverse as it may seem, I may actually owe these people a debt of gratitude.

(Galactica - Joes)

Lee: You know I realize there’s nothing I can say that can make this right. But there’s something you need to know. I asked you to marry me because I was in love with you. Just like I’m in love with you now.

(Galactica - Brig)

Baltar: They forced me to admit my failings.

(Galactica - Room)

(Roslin, Adama, Cottle, and Tigh are watching on Closed Circuit TV)

Baltar: And now I feel positively liberated.

(Galactica - Joes)

Lee: You were right. I loved Kara. You know, maybe there’s part of me that always will.

(Galactica - Brig)

Baltar: In my heart, I know I have always done what I’ve had to do.

(Galactica - Joes)

Lee: But I married you, I married you. And you know, when I look back at our marrage, at the time that we have spent together, you are good for me Dee, and I need you. And I don’t think I ever really realized that until I knew that I was losing you.

(Galactica - Brig)

Gaeta: I can’t promise you a trial Doctor. I am sure if you give them something, anything.

(Galactica - Joes)

Lee: Just give me another chance, that’s all that I’m asking. Just give us a chance.

(Galactica - Room)

(Roslin, Adama, Cottle, and Tigh are watching on Closed Circuit TV)

Gaeta: These charts, that I’ve been using to plot our course to Earth, I’ve never been confident of my calculations.

(Galactica - Brig)

Baltar: Well that’s likely because the calculations are wrong. I’ve detected a number of inconsistencies right off the bat, you see. These figures here are wrong.
Gaeta: That’s exactly what I was afraid of.
(He looks up at the camera)
Baltar: Cylon navigation systems are far more advanced than our own but I have managed to commit many of the algorithms to memory.
Gaeta: If uh, we can offer them this kind of help. I’m certain at the very least they’ll spare your life. Maybe we can ever get you out of this cell, and offer you some proper quarters.

(Galactica - Joes)

(Dee takes Lee’s hand)

(Galactica - Brig)

Baltar: Creature comforts, there’s the clincher.
Gaeta: Sorry.
Baltar: Where is it?
Gaeta: Where is what, doctor.
Baltar: Where is what.

(Baltar looks up and finds the camera.)

(Galactica - Room)

Tigh: So much for that little strategy, huh?
Baltar: Hello.

(Galactica - Joes)

(Dee and Lee notice Kara and Sam at the bar)

Sam: You alright? Listen we don’t have to stay here if you don’t want to.
Kara: Yeah.
(they kiss)
Sam: Two whiskeys, straight up.

(Galactica - Brig)

Baltar: I should have known that you’d betray me. What did you tell them? That you stayed behind till the grisly end on New Caprica, so you could what? So you could uh, you could feed information to the Resistance? Who do you think allowed you to do that?
Gaeta: That’s a lie!
Baltar: No it’s not a lie. You think I’m blind? You see I literally had a gun pointed to my head. But nobody forced you to play both sides. So I’m asking you, Mister Gaeta, who is the real traitor in this room?

(Galactica - Joes)

Sam: To the first of many! Let’s do another!
(Kara looks over at Lee.)
(Lee and Dee kiss)
(Kara and Sam laugh.)

(Galactica - Brig)

Gaeta: I am not a traitor.
Baltar: No of course, because there are far worse things than being a traitor, aren’t there, Felix? If your friends only knew the truth. Don’t worry, we’ll keep that a secret.

(Baltar grabs Gaeta’s head to whisper in his ear)

(Galactica - Room)

Adama: We gotta get in there.

(Gaeta reacts violently towards whatever Baltar said. He throws him and picks up and pen and jabs it into Baltar’s neck.)

(Galactica - Brig)

Gaeta: Get off of me. (jabs a pen into his neck) FRAK YOU!
Guard: Lieutenant Gaeta, step away from the prisoner, now. Step away from the prisoner, I will not ask you again.
Adama: Stand down, Sergeant. Step back, Mister Gaeta.
Gaeta: No! No, Sir! I can’t let him live, not after what he’s done.
Roslin: Mister Gaeta, Mister Gaeta, wait please. Look at me, I understand what you’re feeling.
Gaeta: No you don’t.
Roslin: Yes I do, the other night you didn’t come here to interrogate Doctor Baltar, you came here to kill him, didn’t you? I understand that, I do.
(Adama punches Gaeta square in the face, knocking him out cold. Cottle grabs Baltar)
Roslin: What’s his condition.
Cottle: He missed the artery, he’ll live. Gotta get him to sick bay. Get a gurney in here right away.
Roslin (to the guard picking up Gaeta): Go easy on him.

(Galactica - Sickbay)

HeadSix: All things considered Gaius, it could have been worse, much worse. Well you’re not one of the five. You certainly have the luck of the Gods.
Baltar: Well, I am the chosen one.
HeadSix: You didn’t tell go tell them that, did you?
Baltar: No. Everybody’s gotta have a secret.

(Galactica - Adama’s Quarters)

Roslin: I told him I didn’t take any satisfaction seeing his pain. But the truth is I was willing to endure a great deal of suffering in order to get what I wanted. It wasn’t some intelligence or some truths, I wanted a genuine admission of guilt.
Adama: That’s something you’re not gonna get some someone like Baltar. He doesn’t seem himself that way. It’s not who he is. In his eyes, he’s the victim, not the criminal. It’s not too late for him to just disappear.
Roslin: We can’t do that. For all his crimes, he’s one of us.
Adama: So what happens next?
Roslin: We give him his trial.

(Deleted Scene)
(Galactica - Sharon’s old cell)

Roslin: Gentle. Thank you. So all we really know is that Baltar was not involved in the attack, and we need more.
CapSix: And I need to know that won’t be air locked.
Roslin: No, you will not be air locked. I give you my word.
CapSix: Like you gave Leoben your word before sending him reeling out into space? Yeah he told us. Suppose it’s a courtesy compared to how you treat your own kind, right? You’re torturing him, aren’t you?
Roslin: What do they call you?
CapSix: Caprica.
Roslin: Caprica! Caprica, I can see that you still have deep feelings for him even though he betrayed you and the like, I don’t understand that . But I can recognize the authenticity of your feelings. Your love could help him.
CapSix: You had a justice system once, didn’t you? Courts, juries, innocent until proven guilty? Or has all that withered away along with your conscious, Madam President?
Roslin: I’m trying to offer you a deal, Caprica.
CapSix: How about I offer you a deal? Try Gaius. For his sins if that what you judge them to be, and I’ll tell you everything you wanna know. Try him and I’ll be your chief witness.
